Shogun
This film is an adaptation of a novel by James Clavell. In the 1980s, Toshiro Mifune gained popularity by playing Yoshii Toraenaga. The novel is a fiction written by Clavell, inspired by the diaries of Miura Anjin and set during Japan’s Warring States period. In the story, William Adams, an English navigator who actually existed, is portrayed as John Blackthorne. The novel pays homage to many historical figures in Japan, making it a fascinating work.
ジェームズ・クラベル（James Clavell）同名の小説の映画化。１９８０年代には三船敏郎が吉井虎永を演じて人気を博した。この小説は、クラベルが戦国時代に実在したイギリスの航海士ウイリアム・アダムス（劇中ではジョン・ブラックホーン（John Blackthorne）、三浦按針の日記を参考にして書かれたフィクションだが、実在した日本の歴史上の偉人が数多くオマージュされていて非常に興味深い作品となっている。
Anjin Miura 三浦按針 （みうら あんじん）
In the drama, the character’s real name is John Blackthorne, played by Cosmo Jarvis. Miura Anjin is based on William Adams, an English navigator who was the first Briton to receive the title of Hatamoto in Japan. Miura Anjin served as a close adviser to Tokugawa Ieyasu, but his interactions with other historical figures in Japan as depicted in the drama appear to be entirely fictional.
劇中の本名はジョン・ブラックソーン、俳優はコズモ・ジャービス。三浦按針は実在した日本で最初に旗本の称号を得たイギリスの航海士ウイリアム・アダムスがモデルになっている。三浦按針は徳川家康の側近として仕えたが、劇中で出てくる日本の歴史上の偉人との接触はすべてフィクションのようである。

The grave of Miura Anjin (William Adams), known as “Anjinzuka,” is located in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. William Adams arrived in Japan in 1600 and earned the trust of Tokugawa Ieyasu, becoming the first Western samurai. He introduced new navigation techniques to Japan and contributed to diplomacy and trade. His grave was built to honor his achievements in Japan, attracting many tourists and history enthusiasts. Anjinzuka symbolizes his significant impact and life in Japan, serving as an important historical landmark.

東京日本橋・按針通りと按針の碑 Anjin-Street and the Monument
The reason there is a monument to Miura Anjin on Anjin-dori in Nihonbashi Tokyo is because the location is close to where he once lived. William Adams, known as Miura Anjin in Japan, arrived in the early 1600s and later gained the trust of Tokugawa Ieyasu, playing an important role in early Edo period Japan. He was granted land by Ieyasu, a portion of which was in the Nihonbashi area. The monument was erected to commemorate his achievements in Japan and his contributions to the region. Therefore, it is placed in this location, deeply connected to his life.
日本橋の按針通りに三浦按針の碑がある理由は、その場所がかつて彼が居住していた地域に近いからです。ウィリアム・アダムス（三浦按針）は、1600年代初頭に日本に来航し、後に徳川家康の信頼を得て江戸時代の初期において重要な役割を果たしました。家康から土地を賜り、その一部が日本橋地区にあったとされています。この碑は、彼の日本での業績とその地域への貢献を記念するために設置されました。そのため、彼の生活と関連が深いこの場所に碑が建てられています。

Mariko Toda 戸田鞠子 （とだ まりこ）
The character is modeled after Hosokawa Gracia, the third daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide and a Christian convert. She is portrayed by Anna Sawai, a Japanese actress from New Jersey. In the drama, the phrase “Flowers are flowers” comes from Gracia’s death poem, “It is only when the time comes for them to scatter that flowers are flowers and people are people.”
明智光秀の三女でキリシタンだった細川ガラシャがモデル。ニュージャージー州出身の日本人女優澤井杏奈（サワイ・アンナ）が演じている。劇中ででてくる「花は花なれ」は「散りぬべき 時知りてこそ 世の中の 花も花なれ 人も人なれ」という細川ガラシャの辞世の句。
Yabushige Kashigi 樫木藪重（かしぎ やぶしげ）
The character is modeled after the historical figure Honda Masanobu. The actor is Tadanobu Asano. In the drama, the death poem “When I die, do not burn me, do not bury me, expose me in the fields to fatten the belly of a starved dog” is actually a famous poem by the renowned Japanese poet Ono no Komachi.
実在した本多正信がモデル。俳優は浅野忠信。劇中で辞世の句として詠まれた「我死なば、焼くな埋むな、野にさらせ、痩せたる犬の腹肥やせ」は日本の有名な歌人小野小町の唄。
